The blend
Taurine, ginkgo leaf, eyebright, grape seed, coleus forskohlii root, alpha lipoic acid, rutin, quercetin, bilberry fruit, saffron stigma, lycopene, lutein from marigold, zeaxanthin and astaxanthin.
Lutein and zeaxanthin
These carotenoids concentrate in the macula. The AREDS2 trial used 10 mg lutein and 2 mg zeaxanthin daily to slow progression of advanced macular degeneration.
Saffron
Small trials found 20 to 30 mg of saffron daily improved some measures of visual function in early macular degeneration.
Astaxanthin and bilberry
Astaxanthin has been studied for eye fatigue in screen users. Bilberry's night-vision reputation comes from tradition; modern studies are mixed.
Vitamins and minerals
Vitamins C and E, zinc and copper are the backbone of AREDS formulas, although AREDS used much larger amounts of vitamin C and zinc.
Ginkgo, eyebright, taurine and others
Ginkgo may support circulation, taurine is abundant in the retina, and eyebright is a traditional eye herb. Evidence for these in supplement form is limited.
